MR MONSTER MATHS

By Josie Whitehead

Mr Monster Maths

Each morning at school we knew who’d arrived:
A good night behind him and fully revived!

One look from that face and we’d shake in our shoes,
And even a glance could mean truly bad news.

Excuses?  Not wanted and neither were lies.
A mathematics teacher and the devil disguised.
Late for his lessons?  Oh no – quite absurd!
Excuses for lateness would never be heard.

Peace reigned supremely.  We did well in our tests
For Monster, our teacher, drew from us our best.

In a world short of work, should we give him our thanks?

Well, without Monster Maths there’d be nowt in our banks.

Yes, I was a teacher who taught subjects which would guarantee my students obtained work when they left me, examination certificates in their hands.  I taught secretarial work, ie Pitman's shorthand, typewriting, secretarial duties, English etc.  I certainly wasn't a monster, though, and my students were pleased that I helped them.  Josie
