WHAT CAN YOU BE?

By Josie Whitehead

What Can You Be - Riddles?

You can see me very clearly as you look at someone’s face

But you never see me clearly when that someone’s in disgrace.

The eyes light up, the lips stretch out whenever you feel glad

And everybody carries one, but never in their bag.

I come out every evening, but you’ll never see me dine.

I’m with a million other friends and always there on time.

In the daytime I’ll be missing, but not stolen by a thief.

On cloudy nights your view of me may be only very brief.

I can tell you now I never was, but to you I’ll always be.

No one ever saw me but perhaps may later see.

People use my name when they speak of future hopes

But throw me off unkindly if they feel they cannot cope.

I work all day and never rest for you and all your friends.

I rise early in the morning and can sleep when your day ends.

I’m a lonely soul at night-time as I sleep under your bed.

I’ve a tongue, that’s very certain, but not in someone’s head.

At the beginning of eternity I have my rightful place

And I am there awaiting you at the end of time and space.

I’ve never lived in London and I’ve never lived in York.

You’ll find me when you’re reading but never when you talk.
