JOSIE'S POEMS

THE IMPORTANCE
OF NOSES
By Josie Whitehead
Tell me how we would manage without any nose
And how would we distinguish a peach from a rose?
And what if aromas like strawberries and cream
Didn't smell different from chocolate ice-cream?
Your nose sends out signals when danger’s about.
If you smelt something burning you might want to shout,
And the strong smell of gas warns of danger as well
So tell someone quickly if you smell this smell.
Our bodies need oxygen for us to stay well,
And our noses inhale this as well as the smells.
Underwater our noses can’t take in the air.
If you play in the river or sea take good care.
Your nose and your tongue work together so well.
With a cold you can’t taste and you also can’t smell.
The nose tells the brain the sweet smells from the sour:
The strong smell of vinegar and the perfume of flowers.
A dog’s sense of smell is much stronger than ours,
So dogs can help humans because of these powers.
Every nose will be different in size and design
But I'm sure you need yours and I surely need mine.
(Except when I have a cold . . . atishoooo)
