Iambic Metre in Poetry

By Josie Whitehead

WHAT IS AN IAMB?

By Josie Whitehead

You cannot eat iambic feet
Served with a tasty sauce.
You cannot ride iambic feet -
They’re nothing like a horse.

You cannot pick them from a tree –
They’re nothing like a plum.
They march across a poetry page
di DUM di DUM di DUM.

I AM, I AM, I AM, I AM –
Oh hear them loud and clear!
I AM, I AM, I AM, I AM –
Oh, there’s nothing much to fear.

Don’t try to spread them on your toast,
The taste would be too sweet.
Just keep them for your special poems –
Those fun iambic feet!
