LISTEN TO
THAT RHYTHM

By Josie Whitehead

Listen to That Rhythm

Our clock has sat upon the wall for eighty years or more.
If he could only write a book, he'd tell you all he saw.
My parents used to have him and their parents did before
And as a baby I looked at his smile upon the wall.

                         For he said:

                         Tick tock, tick tock,
                              Military precision.
                        Tick tock, tick tock,
                              Listen to that rhythm.

He never has a holiday and I’m sure he never sleeps.
He works all day and gets no pay, but still his watch he keeps.
We'd all be in a sorry state if we couldn't see his face
And we'd miss his rhythmic ticking at a steady even pace

                         For he says:

                         Tick tock, tick tock,
                               Military precision.
                        Tick tock, tick tock,
                             Listen to that rhythm.

* Chosen by many teachers and children in West Yorkshire for publication in 2010 and published in "Josie's Poems - The Anthology".  I hope you like it also.  The clock has sat on my wall for 80 years or more.   It was striking 10 am as I was being born.  However, it is an Edwardian clock so it could be about 124 years old at least.  How would you like to work for that number of years and still continue working? tick tock, tick tock, chime, chime, chime.
