MISTAKEN IDENTITY

By Josie Whitehead

Mistaken Identity

My friend has bought a lovely horse,

     As tiny as can be.

He tries to jump upon my lap

And is as friendly as can be.

He doesn’t like the hay they buy

     Preferring meat instead.

He howls at night whenever they

Put him out in the shed.

His tail’s not like a horse’s tail,

And he wags it when he’s pleased,

But his head goes down and tail as well

     Whenever he’s displeased.

I didn’t know that horses barked,

      Or their feet resemble paws.

Oh, he doesn’t have a horse’s hooves,

But on his feet are claws.

I heard some barking from their home

When the postman brought the mail:

Now I’m sure they’ve made a big mistake,

     And their pet must be a . . . . . . . . . .

A whale?  A snail?  Well, what then?
