A BLACKBIRD SINGS

By Josie Whitehead

Blackbird Sings (A)

A blackbird sings from on my roof
     As happy as can be,
And I would be so proud if I
Sang such a song as he.

From high up on this pinnacle
He feels that he is king,
Proclaiming to the whole wide world
That soon it will be spring.

If people could but write the words
   Sang by this joyful bird,
They’d engrave upon this sunny day
     A human heartfelt word.

As humans, do we join the birds
    In our own special way?

Yes, through dance, music, pen and paint
    Our feelings are conveyed.
