Similes

Use similes to enhance your writing

Similes:  A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion ).  While both similes and metaphors are used to make comparisons, the difference between similes and metaphors comes down to a word. Similes use the words like or as to compare things.

(A Simile Poem)

By Josie Whitehead

Change

Change – regenerating - like the four seasons of nature -
Transforming our world with growth and restfulness.

Change – heartless - like the flowing stream of life
That carries us on its tide from birth to death .

Change – ruthless - like the storms and hurricanes
Which smite our world with indifference.

Change –immediate - like that very second in time
Which can reshape our world completely.

Change – callous - like those harsh words you said
Which broke my heart like shattering glass.

Change – sombre –like the day which stole my parents
And closed forever a love-window in my world.

Change – guileful - like the gaming table
That deviously stole my money and my self-respect.

Change – joyous - like that happy meeting
With the person who can change your life forever.

Change - continuous - like the ebb and flow of ocean tides
Which kiss the shores of each continent of our world.
