THE SOUND OF THE CITY

By Josie Whitehead

Sound of the City (The)

The city, now in morning light,
Rouses from its sleepless night -
And yawning buildings and shop doors
     Welcome shoppers in their scores.

Commuters, ready for their day,
Arrive with nerves prepared to fray,
Whilst trains and buses, taxis, cars,
Bring visitors from near or far.

Shopkeepers welcome one and all -
The thin the fat, the short and tall -
And smiles from those prepared to sell
     Will cast a captivating spell.

The sound of nature’s drowned by din
As human noise is bound to win -
And hour by hour, the tills ring out
That all is well, there is no doubt!
