THE THIEF IN THE NIGHT

By Josie Whitehead

Thief in the Night (The)

Silently, stealthily, down comes the snow
Like a thief who breaks in, in the night.
Even the northerly winds cease to blow,
Though their teeth still continue to bite.

A blanket of white is spread on the ground,
Across rooftops, on fields and on hedges.
Here come the children to laugh and to play
With snowballs, snow slides and their sledges.

Tomorrow the scenery may suddenly change
When this wintry world's gone away.
The blues and the greens will return once again -
No place for the snowman or sleigh!

METAPHOR:  Likening one thing to something quite different:

Arrival of snow Like a thief who breaks in, in the night.

A blanket of white is spread on the ground.

Northerly winds:  Their teeth still continue to bite.
