TREAD CAREFULLY

By Josie Whitehead

Tread Carefully

Don’t trample the dreams stored deep in my heart

Before they’ve emerged and had their kick start.

     Don’t shower me with words to completely destroy

     The chance that my longings may bring me some joy.

Tread carefully before you stampede on my hopes.

My ambitions are anchored to *frangible ropes.

     Tread carefully and give me the chance I require

     Without torching my goals in the flames of your fire.

Don’t axe my ambitions with words that destroy;

Don’t fling your cruel words that cut deep and annoy.

     Tread carefully, but kindly, as you walk through my day.

     My hopes and my dreams are too precious to slay!

* frangible = easily broken.  I'm imagining that a person's hopes and ambitions are linked to their mind by little ropes - perhaps from the heart.

When I talk about 'the dreams stored deep in my heart' I think of the 11 plus when educationalists divided those who they felt had little IQ from those who perhaps had a high IQ.  Rubbish!!! and rubbish again.  I wanted to be a teacher from the age of 5 and to tell me at the age of 11 that I had a low IQ?  Rubbish again.  Don't let anyone trample your dreams.  You can do anything you set your heart on - - - especially if you work hard.  I taught all my life and loved every minute of my work with the young people I helped in life!  It was what God wanted me to do - and oh, I'm still working now aged 84 aren't I?    Enjoy my poems.                Josie
