Truth

I searched through every cupboard shelf -
     The refrigerator too,
But what I looked for wasn’t there:
Oh just what should I do?

I then searched underneath the chairs:
      I’d surely find it there,

But, search and search and search again:
     But no, not anywhere.

I  hunted through my coat pockets,
   Then looked inside my car.
Perhaps you know just where I’ll find
   My lovely chocolate bar.

I knew my dog was not a thief
And my cat was not, that’s true:
But then I heard the sound of feet . . . .
   Oh, surely it’s not YOU?

But what is that all round your mouth?
The truth is out for sure,
For you scoffed the little treat I’d bought,

Then crept back here for more!
