LONELINESS

By Josie Whitehead

Loneliness

Loneliness is a shadow that crosses the mind;
The telephone whose voice is eerily silent;
The doorbell that remains untouched and sterile.
Loneliness is a desert island in a sea of despair.

Loneliness is an inner yearning for love and friendship;
Long hours of night accompanied by a ticking clock.
It is the lonely road without a travelling companion;
The overwhelming feeling of abandonment, alienation.

Loneliness is the meeting of yourself face to face
In a cold world, devoid of human interaction,
Where you struggle to remember happy days.

It is the extinguishing of inner embers of expectancy.

It is human withdrawal, confinement, despair and death.
